Hyperlocal marketing: when an online shop should care where people live
Marketing to people because of where they are. For an online-only shop it's usually beside the point. Add a shop, a stockist, an event or local delivery and it isn't.
- 058Hyperlocal Marketing
- Marketing strategies that focus on targeting customers within a very specific geographic area, often using location-based data.

- Worth it when
- You have a shop, stockists, events, local delivery or regional products
- Best data
- The address on past orders, not a guess from an IP address
- Watch out for
- Location is personal data, and being too precise reads as creepy
When an online shop has a local reason to care
Look, if you ship the same products to every postcode at the same price, hyperlocal marketing isn't your problem. Skip it. It starts mattering the moment part of your business is tied to a place.
- A shop, showroom or studio people can visit
- Stockists, where a launch in one town is news to customers nearby
- Events, markets and pop-up shops with a date and a venue
- Local delivery or click and collect with its own cut-off
- Products that sell differently by region or by weather
Postcodes beat IP addresses for location data
You already hold better location data than any ad platform's guess: the address on every order. Klaviyo's Shopify integration sets each profile's location from the billing address, and only falls back on an IP address when it hasn't got one. So a segment of customers near your shop is a filter. Not a data project.
Klaviyo will even build it by distance: everyone within a set number of miles of a postcode. For a UK postcode you enter only the first part, the bit before the space. Leave email opens out of it. Klaviyo's help centre says opens don't update a profile's location, and Apple's Mail Privacy Protection hides the reader's IP address anyway.
Using location in email and SMS without being creepy
The line between helpful and creepy is whether the customer can see why you know. An invitation to an evening at the shop near the address they gave you reads as service. A message that names their street reads as surveillance.
Keep the segment tight. Send the invite to people who could actually get there, and spare everyone else a Saturday in a town they'll never visit. On the day itself, a text is the better reminder, and that's where SMS earns its cost.

FAQs

Does hyperlocal marketing make sense for an online-only shop?
Usually not, and that's fine. If every customer gets the same products, prices and delivery wherever they live, location adds little. It starts paying when you open a shop, sign a stockist, run an event or offer local delivery. Until then, put the effort into segments built on what people buy.
How accurate is location data in email marketing?
It depends where it came from. An address the customer typed at checkout is accurate, and it's what Klaviyo uses to set location from Shopify orders. A guess from an IP address is rough, and email opens are no help at all, because Apple's Mail Privacy Protection hides the reader's IP address. Build local segments from the addresses on orders and forms.
Is a customer's postcode personal data?
Yes. A postcode or address linked to a person is personal data under UK GDPR, so you need a lawful basis to use it for marketing and a privacy notice that says you will. Keep the use to what the customer would expect from you. This is a summary, not legal advice.
