Responsive design: fitting the phone is the easy part

A responsive store rearranges itself to fit whatever screen it's on. Any modern Shopify theme does that. Whether the rearranged version still sells is a separate question.

What a responsive layout decides for you, and what it doesn't

Responsive design is one site with layout rules that change with the width of the screen. Columns stack, menus fold into a drawer, images shrink. You build it once and it fits everywhere, which is why it's the standard approach, and why Google recommends it as the easiest pattern to build and maintain.

What it can't do is decide what matters on a small screen. Two banners side by side on a laptop become two tall banners on a phone, and the products start a long way down. Somebody has to make that call on purpose.

Where responsive Shopify stores still lose people on a phone

  • Words baked into banner images, unreadable at phone width
  • Price and add to cart pushed below a tall photo gallery
  • Pop-ups that cover the page, with the close button out of reach
  • Apps that each add a widget, a script and a little more waiting
  • Menus and filters that only really work with a mouse

Each one is small. Together they're how a store looks fine on the founder's phone and still loses more mobile sales than it should. Sign-up forms are a usual suspect, and Klaviyo lets you target a form at mobile or desktop, so the phone can get a smaller one.

Check your store the way customers arrive at it

Open your own store on your phone, from an email link and from a search result, on mobile data, not the office wifi. Time how long it takes to get from the tap to the add to cart button. Then try a product page you haven't looked at in months.

Shopify's analytics splits your sessions by device type. Compare how phones and desktops convert. If phones bring most of the visits and convert far worse, that gap is where the work is, and it's the same gap mobile optimisation closes from the email side.

Search cares too. Google says it uses the mobile version of your content for indexing and ranking, so anything you hide or cut on phones may as well not exist, as far as search goes.

Does my Shopify theme make my store responsive?

Almost certainly. Shopify's current themes reflow to fit phones, tablets and desktops. What a theme can't do is choose what matters on a small screen, or stop apps and custom sections from cluttering it. Check the pages that take money on a real phone: the homepage, a collection, a product page and the cart.

Is a separate mobile site better than responsive design?

For a shop, almost never. Two versions means two sets of pages to keep in step, and the mobile one is the version Google uses for ranking. A responsive site keeps the same content on every screen, which is the simplest way to stay consistent. Spend the effort on what the phone layout shows first.

Why does my store convert worse on phones than on desktop?

Some of the gap is people browsing on a phone and buying later on a laptop. The part you can fix is friction: slow pages, prices below the fold, pop-ups in the way, and a checkout that asks for too much typing. Express checkouts like Shop Pay and Apple Pay take most of the typing out.
