Inbound marketing for online shops: get found, then get the email address

Getting customers to come to you, through content they were already looking for. Half of it is being found. The other half, the one most shops skip, is being remembered.

Inbound for an online shop is mostly search and a sign-up form

Inbound is the customer coming to you. For an online shop, that's mostly search. Someone types a question, your buying guide or product page answers it, and they land on your site of their own accord. Add quizzes, comparison pages, social posts people choose to follow, and the answers AI assistants give when someone asks what to buy.

Outbound is the opposite: ads, cold outreach, anything that interrupts. Inbound doesn't charge you per click. It charges you in time.

Turning a reader into a subscriber before they close the tab

Here's the hard truth: a ranking brings readers, not customers. Someone reading your guide to choosing walking boots is researching. If they leave without giving you an email address, you'll have to win them from Google all over again, against everyone else selling boots.

What they searchedWhat to offer themWhat happens next
A how-to or care questionA short guide or checklist by emailA welcome flow that teaches first, then sells
A comparison between productsA buying guide or a quizA flow that branches on their answer
Your brand or a product nameThe first order offer, if you run oneThe product page, then the cart flow

The usual mistake is one discount pop-up firing at every reader. We've written up why blog traffic doesn't convert when that happens, and what to put in its place.

Where email sits in an inbound programme

Email is the part of inbound that keeps what search and social found. Someone who signed up after reading a guide asked to hear from you, and that permission is the asset. A welcome flow that carries on the guide's advice earns the first order. Campaigns that stay useful earn the rest.

Cold email isn't inbound. It's outbound with a worse reputation. Under the ICO's rules on electronic mail marketing, you need consent, or an existing customer relationship under the soft opt-in, before you send marketing email to individuals.

FAQs

FAQs

Is email marketing inbound or outbound?

Inbound, when the people on the list asked to be there. It's the follow-up a visit earned. Email to people who never signed up is outbound, and in the UK you generally can't send marketing email to individuals without their consent, or the soft opt-in that comes with a previous purchase. That's a summary, not legal advice.

How long does inbound marketing take to work?

Longer than ads, and anyone promising a date is guessing. Rankings build over months, and a reputation over longer. What you can do from day one is make each visit count: a sign-up offer that suits the content, and a welcome flow ready for whoever signs up.

What's the difference between inbound marketing and content marketing?

Content marketing is the making: guides, posts, videos, quizzes. Inbound is the whole loop around it, from being found to catching the visitor to following up by email until they buy. You can do content marketing without the rest of the loop. It's how blogs end up with traffic and no customers.
