Impressions: what counts as one, and why shown isn't the same as seen
One showing of your ad or your search listing. It counts the chance to be seen, not whether anybody looked, and that gap is where most impression numbers mislead.
- 059Impression
- A metric that counts how many times an ad or content is displayed to users, regardless of whether it was clicked.

- Counted when
- Your ad or listing is shown, whether or not anyone notices
- Not the same as
- Reach, which counts people instead of showings
- Most useful for
- Spotting a change in visibility before clicks move
Shown on the page, not necessarily seen
Google Ads counts an impression each time your ad is shown on a results page or elsewhere on its network, in its own impressions definition. Search Console is looser still. Your listing earns an impression whenever it's on the page of results somebody loaded, scrolled to or not, according to Google's Search Console help.
So an impression is a chance, not attention. Think of it as footfall past a shop window. Some of them looked in.
Impressions, reach and frequency, side by side
| Measure | What it counts | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Every showing of the ad or listing | Big numbers that never turn into clicks |
| Reach | Different people who saw it at least once | A ceiling, because the audience may just be small |
| Frequency | Impressions divided by reach: showings per person | The same people seeing it so often they tune out |
Frequency is the one founders feel. When your own team starts seeing your ads in every app, your customers probably are too.
Where impression numbers earn their keep
- In Search Console, impressions rising while clicks stay flat says you're showing up for more searches, but too low down or with a title nobody picks
- In Google Ads, impression share shows how often your ads appeared out of all the times they could have
- For awareness campaigns, reach and frequency matter more than clicks, as long as somebody checks that sales follow
An audience you don't pay to see again
Every impression an ad platform sells you is rented. Once somebody joins your email list, reaching them again costs a send, not another round of impressions. That's the whole case for asking paid visitors for an email address.
Email has its own version of the problem, mind. An open is counted when a tracking image loads, and Apple Mail loads it automatically for readers who've switched on its privacy protection. Shown, not seen, all over again.

FAQs

What's the difference between impressions and reach?
Reach counts people. Impressions count showings. If one person sees your ad five times, that's five impressions and a reach of one. Divide impressions by reach and you get frequency, which tells you whether you're reminding people or wearing them out.
Why are our Search Console impressions up when clicks aren't?
You're appearing for more searches, but not in a way that earns the click. Usually that's new rankings low on the page, rankings for loosely related phrases, or something sitting above you, like an AI overview or a row of Shopping ads. Check average position and the queries list before you celebrate.
Are impressions worth paying for?
When the job is awareness, yes, as long as you check that sales follow. Pay for impressions in front of people likely to buy, then turn the ones who visit into subscribers, so the next reminder is an email and not another ad.
